Everyone Loves Elwood

Everyone Loves Elwood

Elwood will always be the beloved dog of Karen Quigley – together they were one heart and soul. Elwood was put on this earth for a purpose – to educate and make the world a better place…and he did that job very well.

Elwood soared to fame after winning the 2007 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest and shared his message that it’s okay to be different in his children’s pictured book entitled, Everyone Loves Elwood. Elwood was rescued through a New Jersey SPCA investigation whose original owner deemed him too ugly to sell, but Elwood showed the world he was PERFECT just the way he was.

After Elwood won this very prestigious contest in 2007, he became an international sensation. Stories about America’s newest darling appeared in England, China, Ireland, Turkey, Brazil, Chile and many other countries as well as all over the United States. This pint-sized pup that hailed from Sewell, NJ was capturing hearts worldwide. As his celebrity grew, he began making television appearances on “The View,” “Rachel Ray Show,” “Dogs 101,” “Animal Planet,” “Most Outrageous Animals,” “CNN,” “Weekend Today” and even appeared in broadcasts in Brazil, Germany and England.

But Elwood’s true mission and purpose was to spread the message to help homeless and abused animals and teach people about being kind and accepting of difference for all beings. Elwood supported hundreds of non-profit rescue groups to help raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for animals in need – asking NOTHING in return! NJ Monthly Magazine named Elwood the “Most Inspirational Dog in New Jersey” for all his charity work. Elwood visited schools teaching children to be kind to animals and educating them on the importance of spay/neuter and saving animals from shelters. Elwood even became the topic of a series of lessons about respecting differences conducted by Andreia Meirlese, a 2nd grade teacher in Brazil. The school created a 90×90 poster of the Brazilian and American flags, with Elwood’s photo uniting the two flags; appearing over the flags the word “Respect Differences” in English and Portuguese.

Elwood had the privilege of appearing in his first commercial for Frontier Airlines, a Colorado based airline in October 2011. Also, when Elwood’s guardian, Karen Quigley was asked to deliver the Keynote Address for Gloucester County College’s Commencement Ceremony on May 21, 2011, Elwood was in her arms (in his cap and gown) as they shared his message of kindness to animals and each other, service to others and giving back.
